Striking a perfect balance between career and family life has never been an easy task. Our already overcrowded schedules can get too busy to handle, especially now that we have the luxury to work from home due to the pandemic. Indeed, forgetting to set boundaries between work and family life can cause either one of these two to suffer, and though most people refuse to admit it, it’s usually the latter that takes the most hit.
The ideal work-life balance that everyone strives for involves learning how to juggle your career woes with the daily pressures of family, friends, and personal struggles. And how does one achieve this seemingly impossible feat, you ask? Well, here are our nine tips to help you get that balance between work and family life:
Don’t approach life like you’re trying to win a race. Be like a marathon runner and achieve a successful work-life balance by mastering the ability to pace yourself. Push yourself to put in the effort your family and work deserve but know when to tap out. Set boundaries and limits for your work hours and set aside any work-related notifications that come in after your shift ends. If you feel yourself getting burned out, keep calm, clear your mind, and recharge.
Learn to say NO
A work-life balance will only be successful if you have set priorities effectively. Prioritize the things that matter most and learn to say “NO” to unimportant things, tasks, or requests. Determining how to set your priorities straight can be tricky at first, but constantly evaluating your use of time will get you on the right path. Ask the right questions and help yourself start your priority list.
Take care of yourself
When schedules start to fill up, the pressure grows, and the temptation to skip out on going to the gym to go on a fast-food binge increase. Fast food serve as comfort food for most people, but regularly eating these “unhealthy” meals can quickly lead to weight and health problems. Add that to a lack of exercise, and it’ll result in a decline in your quality of life, something that will ultimately lead to loss of productivity and even depression. Ladies and gents, don’t forget to invest extra effort for food and exercise, and it will greatly pay off in the long run.
Don’t bite more than what you can chew
Surprisingly, work can become addictive, especially for people who work in demanding, high-stress jobs. Let this serve as a reminder to avoid taking on more than you can handle. As you try to relax with your family, you may feel like your purposely letting your workload pile up and that you can’t afford to take any time off. Don’t let that workaholic voice speak for yourself. Don’t be afraid to unplug— literally and figuratively— when you need to. Doing so will ease your fears and anxieties and prove that leaving work from time to time won’t be as disastrous as you thought it would be.
Simplify your life
Life can become complex for parents trying to balance the demands of work and home life. But even if complexity is inherent to everyone, it’s always best to strive to simplify your life. Scale back on your belongings, schedules, and commitments. Make more time for the things that truly matter– like your family, career, and your well-being. Clear your clutter and free up time in your schedule and help yourself achieve peace of mind. You’ll need strong mental stamina to maintain a work-life balance.
Seek for new job opportunities if you must
An employee needs a workplace that recognizes their employees as real people with real needs– that they are “humans,” not just “human resources.” If you feel like your job is not cooperating with you in striking a healthier work-life balance, it may be best to seek new job opportunities instead. Look for a job that promotes respect for work-life balance, either with flexible hours or generous vacation time.
Eat meals together
Make sure to eat at least one meal together as a family every day. It may not always work, but as long as you do your best to include yourself in family meals, you’ll feel a positive impact on your work-life balance. If your work schedule doesn’t allow you to spend much time with your family, sharing a meal with them, even for just an hour or two, will let you have a meaningful connection with your partner and children and give you a chance to get to know them and show how much you care.
Build family rituals
Are the family meals not working out? Set aside one night a week to be together and build family rituals– no interruptions, no excuses. While it may mean tweaking your work schedule, these nights will do wonders for your work-life balance and strengthen your family relationships. Allow yourself to share fun memories with your children–play games, enjoy music or pop in a movie. The key is that you’re spending downtime with the people you love.
Go easy on yourself
Always keep in mind that work is only one part of you– not your whole being! We only go around once, so you must go easy on yourself and enjoy life! Make time for fun and look for opportunities to enjoy both work and home life. Find the humor in things, and don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself.
